Proxmox Deployment & VMware Migration
Proxmox VE design, deployment and migration off VMware — without a licensing surprise.
How It Works
VMware licensing changed sharply after the Broadcom acquisition, and a lot of Houston businesses opened a renewal quote that bore no relationship to the previous one. Some of those environments genuinely need VMware. Many do not, and are paying enterprise pricing for features they have never switched on.
Proxmox VE is a mature, open-source hypervisor with clustering, high availability, built-in backup and ZFS or Ceph storage. For a large share of small and mid-sized environments it does everything the incumbent did, without a per-core subscription. It is not a universal answer — it is a serious option that most providers will not raise with you, because reselling VMware pays better.
We size the platform against your actual workloads, build and test the cluster before anything moves, migrate virtual machines in a sequence that keeps production running, and hand over documentation your own staff can operate. If the honest answer after discovery is that you should stay on VMware or move to Hyper-V, we will say so — the assessment is the same either way.
Key Benefits
- A renewal quote you can put next to a real alternative, with the migration effort costed rather than guessed
- Clustering, high availability and live migration without a per-core subscription
- Built-in backup and replication configured and tested, not left as an exercise
- ZFS or Ceph storage sized against your workload rather than a vendor template
- Migration sequenced so production keeps running and every step has a rollback
- Documentation and handover, so you are not swapping one lock-in for a dependency on us
Proxmox Deployment & VMware Migration — common questions
- For most small and mid-sized environments, yes — it has been running production workloads for years, with clustering, HA and live migration. The honest caveats are ecosystem-shaped: fewer third-party integrations than VMware, and enterprise support is a paid subscription you should budget for rather than skip.
- It depends on VM count, storage layout and how much downtime each workload can tolerate. Discovery is scoped and quoted separately so you get a real number before committing, and that number is what you compare against your renewal — not a hopeful estimate.
- Then we will tell you. Some environments genuinely depend on VMware-specific features or third-party integrations, and moving would cost more than the licence. The assessment is worth doing precisely because the answer is not always the same.
- Yes, and that is usually how it goes. The new cluster is built and validated before anything migrates, workloads move in batches, and the old platform stays available until you are satisfied.
- We do, under a managed tier, or your own team if you would rather — the handover documentation is written for that. We also arrange Proxmox enterprise subscriptions where the support-backed repository matters to you.
